Dog Enrichment – Tips and Tools

When we choose to become dog parents, it is our responsibility to ensure our dog is fulfilled mentally, physically, and emotionally. When discussing physical stimulation, we simply take our dog for a walk, play fetch, and go for a jog together. When we discuss emotional fulfillment we typically think of cuddling, comforting, and providing praise. However, what do we do to provide our dog enrichment mentally? A tired dog is a happy, well-behaved dog and luckily there are plenty of ways to incorporate mental stimulation into your dog’s everyday life. Here are some top tricks!

Puzzles

There are a wide variety of puzzle activities that range in difficulty available on Amazon and local pet stores that allow dogs to problem solve for rewards. Most puzzles operate by hiding treats under pieces which the dog moves with their nose to open different compartments. We recommend starting with easy puzzles to encourage your dog to stay engaged and motivated and gradually increase difficulty with development. If you start with a harder puzzle, your dog may become frustrated and give up.

Hide and Seek

Playing hide and seek with your dog is a fun game that both pup and owner can enjoy together. Best played in a safe space with a range of hiding places. Once your dog is distracted, hide in a moderately difficult place and call your dogs name. The dog will proceed to “search” for you by following its directional senses. Once you have been found, celebrate with praise and excitement. You can continue to play hide and seek sporadically throughout the day.

Towel Roll

A simple DIY puzzle is the towel roll. First, you lay a towel flat on the ground and sprinkle treats evenly on the surface. Then, take the outside edges and fold them towards the center. Finally, roll the towel up and give it to your dog. Using their nose, your dog will slowly begin to uncover the treats! Gradually increase the difficulty by rolling the towel in different ways. If you really want to step up the level of difficulty, tie a knot in the towel.

Chewing Outlets

Any outlet that allows your dog to tap into their innate instincts can be beneficial for mental fulfillment. At home pick out a bone or toy that is both durable and enjoyed by your pup. Then you will put it away and out of reach from your dog. On days that your dog needs some extra enrichment, take out this high-value chew and watch the magic happen! Once your dog loses interest, take the chew away until the next time you need to provide stimulation. By taking away toys and chews often, you are ensuring that your dog stays interested and excited with the object each time it’s offered to them!

Incorporating mental enrichment into your routine is very simple and can be very fun and fulfilling. A physically, emotionally, and mentally stimulated dog is a happy one!
