As the winter season fast approaches, it’s important for all of us pet owners to take precautions and maintain safety. Sure our fur-babies have cozy coats that keep them warm during the colder months but temperatures still need to be taken into consideration. Keep an eye out especially when temps dip below zero – because with wind-chill and snowfall added in, those chilly numbers can plummet faster than you’d expect! As the cold, snowy season approaches, it is recommended to take a look at cold weather safety for your furry friends. While yes most have fluffy coats to keep them warm, it is still very important to know what to watch out for each year!

While ice and snow are both something to keep an eye on for when your pets play outside, the cold drop in temperatures are just as important to watch. Temperatures dropping below 0° degrees Celsius can happen quickly. With the aid of wind and snow, it can feel much colder than displayed on a thermometer.

Your furry friend is no different from humans when it comes to bodily reactions to the cold. They can get hypothermia and frostbite from extreme cold weather just like us. When letting your pets outside during the winter months, it is always best to watch them carefully and never leave them outside for too long.

If a pet is left outside in the cold weather for too long, it is recommended to check them over for possible signs of hypothermia or frostbite. Signs and symptoms to look out for could be the following :

Frostbite

  • Skin is very cold to the touch
  • Swelling
  • Blue / Grey discolouration of the skin
  • Stiffness
  • Pain in affected areas
  • Commonly affected areas could include ears, paws and tails

Hypothermia

  • Delayed reflexes
  • Pale skin / gums
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Increased or decreased heart rate

If you notice unusual behaviors or any of these signs or symptoms, it is strongly recommended to consult with your veterinarian.

A helpful tip that can keep your fur-baby warmer this year could be some winter gear. This could be boots, sweaters, hats or coats. Some dogs could really use the extra help in the cold, breeds such as Greyhounds, Chihuahuas, or even Great Danes are commonly seen wearing winter gear in those cold months.

We hope that you and your pet enjoy the snowy winter together building snowmen and making snow angels, but most of all keeping toasty warm this season!
