"...immediately started treatment to save Popcon's life"

Popcorn is a four-month old puppy who arrived at the Austin Humane Society (AHS) from a smaller local shelter, which has not yet reached a no-kill status.

Before she arrived, the team at AHS knew that Popcorn had significant skin infection that required treatment. Upon intake, she was diagnosed with demodex mange and began immediate treatment.

After a few hours in her kennel, the staff noticed that Popcorn was very lethargic and wasn’t moving like a puppy her age would. After being moved to isolation, this sweet girl was tested for parvovirus and, unfortunately, her test came back positive. The AHS clinic team kicked into gear right away and immediately started treatment to save Popcon’s life.

As a no kill shelter, AHS does their absolute best to provide life saving care for pups like Popcorn. Euthanasia is only ever considered if there is the pup is suffering terminally and there is no chance for recovery.

"Austin Humane Society did everything they could to nurse her back to health"

The plan for Popcorn was for her to stay in isolation until she showed no symptoms of parvovirus for at least 72 hours. At that point, routine tests would be performed until she tested negative. After that, Popcorn would be bathed and moved into a regular kennel to continue her treatment until her mange is cured. Then she would become ready for adoption.

Unfortunately, during the course of her treatment, sweet Popcorn passed away due to complications from the parvovirus. The AHS team did everything they could to nurse her back to health and make her comfortable, but in the end the virus was too much for her little body.

With the help of generous supporters like you, TagsforHope was able to provide a grant that gave Popcorn a fighting chance. During the end of her life she was loved and she passed away peacefully while being cuddled by one of the vet technicians.

The AHS staff did everything they possibly could, but her illness won out. Popcorn’s little body has been cremated and her ashes will be spread at a beautiful ranch so her spirit can run free. Popcorn will be remembered with lots of love by everyone who met her.
