"In foster care, Spyder was coming out of her shell"

Spyder was rescued by animal services as a stray. She suffered from the usual circumstances of life on the streets, such as fleas and malnutrition, which was the first step in her care, immediately after she entered the shelter.

Underdog Animal Rescue made the obvious choice to intervene and save Spyder from euthanasia, as she was estimated to be less than two years old.

This is a harsh reality for many healthy dogs in California shelters, and the rate of euthanasia is currently the highest it has been in three years.

She is a healthy, happy puppy who settled in beautifully into her foster home and was really coming out of her shell!

Sadly, an unfortunately accident caused Spyder to have a broken leg. She jumped out of a chair, excited to play, and landed in a way that caused a break in two places. The emergency vet visit, x-rays and the subsequent surgery itself accrued a bill of almost $6000.

"With youth on her side..."

Fortunately, Spyder’s broken leg does not reflect her overall health! With youth on her side, this type of surgery has the highest success rate and Spyder will go on to live a long, healthy life – all that’s left is for her to find a loving home!

This unforeseen financial burden, while challenging, highlights the struggles faced by shelters like Underdog Animal Rescue. Spyder’s surgery was so expensive that it put a considerable strain on Underdog – like many other shelters.

It is cruel to euthanize otherwise healthy dogs, like Spyder, simply because of overwhelming medical expenses. Unfortunately, expenses such as these put into question whether or not a shelter can provide care for future rescues.

But thanks to the staff at Underdog Animal Rescue and the heartwarming support of TagsforHope customers like you, Underdog Animal Center is able to replenish the budget for vet expenses and continue to connect dogs like Spyder to loving homes they are entitled to!
