'...he wandered away from the family home and was injured."

New Hope Dog Rescue heard about Thor from a local vet. This adorable 7-month-old lab cross was brought into the vet care after he had wandered away from the family home and was injured.

X-rays showed that this sweet pup had significant injuries to his left hind leg and the vet felt that the best treatment would be to remove the leg.

Unfortunately, Thor’s family was not in the financial situation to be able to afford the surgery or even the post-op care he would desperately need. But even if those expenses have been taken care of, they did not feel that Thor would survive or thrive in their community as a three-legged dog. The only solution they had, it seemed, was humane euthanasia or surrendering their pup to somebody who could care for him.

That is how Thor ended up at New Hope Dog Rescue and a loving foster family stepped up right away and took him in!

"His prognosis is that he will live a long and healthy life!"

Thor was taken to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in mid-March 2022, where he was met by the surgical team.

After a thorough examination and further x-rays, the team determined that the best course of action would be to put pins into his leg. But that meant he got to keep his leg, too!

During the surgery, the team discovered that Thor’s kneecap kept moving so they chose to put in an additional pin as well, to keep it in place and prevent further dislocation.

After his surgery, Thor continued to recover and gain strength in a most amazing foster home. He did need additional physical rehabilitation as well as some much-improved nutrition, as he was quite thin when he came into care.

With the help of TagsforHope’s grant and thanks to our generous supporters like you, Thor received the all-clear from his vet. His prognosis is that he will live a long and healthy life – with all four legs intact, so he can run and play with his forever family!
